Portraits of Inspiration

Lucy Ash, Gallery 03

The purpose of these artworks is to reinforce the message that LGBTIQ+ progress is a collective effort and is achieved by reaching out and engaging with the community.

The two artworks are both constructed from removable sections which gave the project a dynamic reach. From the beginning the panels asserted their own forceful nature and chosen path which was often a surprise.

With the support of the Gallery, this project was rolled out through open workshops, community workplace events and individual participation from LGBTIQ+ friends and allies. Mirroring the theme of hidden LGBTIQ+ lives that ran through this exhibition, it was always a thrilling moment when sections returned, revealing who people had chosen to paint and why.

Together for the first time, the little paintings have taken on a different dynamic. New connections have been made, stories criss-crossing and surprising neighbours found. The panels can be viewed as multiple groupings or as a whole. The hope is that people will spend time with this selection of extraordinary people from the LGBTIQ+ communities and be inspired.
